The Town Award
presented for outstanding service to
Nailsworth:
Nailsworth Women’s Institute and Country Markets
This award is for a ‘two in one’ community group. Not the
Weighbridge recipe, but a recipe grown from women who represent our
grandmothers and mothers. Press reports of their early days indicate
that after only three years the newly formed group had 222 members,
and just after the war they helped to rebuild the creative element
of the community by performing all-women plays such as ‘O Valiant
Heart’. Their organisation has been in Nailsworth for 62 years, and
throughout that time they have involved themselves in documenting
the distinctive nature of our town.
They
meet political, social and cultural changes with energy and
innovation, always adapting to changes such as post war time,
festivals and new health and safety rules concerning food
production. They have supported local issues, created a parish
boundary map, taken photographs to document changes to our town,
produced excellent walking routes which can be obtained in the Town
Information Centre, joined in with Nailsworth Festival events, and
they continue to grow and make superb vegetables, flowers, plants,
cakes and preserves.

The Young Persons Award
The Young Person’s Award
this year goes
to three people, who have made remarkable
contributions to the place where they live. They are a
credit to the town and ambassadors for Nailsworth. Their
leaders, family and friends are proud of their achievements:
Georgina Mansell
L ast
year was the 90th anniversary of the First Nailsworth
Guides, and it seems fitting that a person such as Georgina
should be selected to represent the continuity and
importance of the group to Nailsworth. Georgina has been a
Brownie, Guider, a Young Leader and is now working on the
Adult Leadership programme.
Ashley Cooke
Ashley
joined Nailsworth and Forest Green Scout Group as a Beaver
and has remained a member of the group, becoming a Cub Scout
and now a Young Leader. He gained a considerable amount of
national scouting awards which demonstrated his growing
commitment to his community and scouting: the Chief Scouts
Gold Award in 2004; in 2005 the Chief Scouts Platinum Award
and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. At the age of 16
Ashley completed the highest of Chief Scouts Awards, the
Diamond Award, and Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver award.
Aaron Dyer
Nailsworth
Youth Club has approximately 135 members and Aaron Dyer has
been a member for many years. In 2006 he entered the County
Pool Competition in Gloucestershire and representing the
club, he played against many other young people from the
area. Winning at this level he progressed and represented
Gloucestershire at competition level in Swindon, playing
against other young people representing their counties, and
later against young people from England, Wales and Scotland,
becoming Under 14 UK Pool Champion.

The Sporting Excellence Awards
The Chamberlain Trophy for
Sporting
Excellence has been donated by James Chamberlain in memory of his
great grandfather, E. A. Chamberlain.
The Chamberlain family have
been major investors in Nailsworth since 1879. The trophy, made by
Peter Ayres, Lite Welding, Nailsworth Mills Estate, will be
presented each year to a person or group who has excelled in their
field of sport. It is fitting this year
to present the trophy to Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club,
whose President is E J R Chamberlain. With a membership of
nearly 90 people Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club excels and
continues a fine tradition which was founded in 1900 on a
green, which was a croquet green, at the rear of The George
Hotel.
In the year 2000 the club enjoyed its centenary celebrations
at its location on the Chamberlain Mills Estate. The ladies
were champions of the Stroud Valleys Triples League and came
third in the Corinium League. The men are champions in
Division 3 of the Gloucestershire County League and will
gain promotion to Division 2 next year; they came second in
the Cotswold League and fourth in the Stroud District
League. In addition to their match days, our local bowling
club opens its doors for taster sessions and encourages
young people to enjoy the sport.
