The Nailsworth Town
Award
The Silver
Jubilee Shield of
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 1952-1977
The Town Award is presented for outstanding service to
Nailsworth:
William Beeston

If I had £1.00 for every
time I heard someone say, “I came to Nailsworth because of his shop”
I would be a wealthy woman.
However, our town has been
enriched in many other ways because we have had the pleasure of
experiencing the outstanding quality of trade his company has
provided Nailsworth and the District for over 30 years.
I have heard people say
that William “is an institution”. He is exemplary in the service and
care he gives to his customers, staff and the community, and this is
mirrored through the recent rebuilding of his premises. He has kept
his trade going throughout the work and informed the public of the
progress of the building works.
As one of the building
contractors remarked to me in February,
“William is a proper English Gent”, one of those rare breeds of
modest traders who cares about his business and the community he
lives in.
William has now created a
remarkably attractive corner to the entrance of our town, which will
continue to be a landmark, ‘William’s Corner’ for many years
in the future. |

The Nailsworth Town
Shield
Young people are the future of our town and to
mark their importance we will present a Town Shield each year
to a person for their outstanding contribution to Nailsworth.
The first recipient of the shield in 2006 is:
Oliver Payne

Oliver
is a long standing and active member of the Junction Youth Club. He
has been involved in the committee, drugs education programme and
represented youth club members at meetings with outside
organizations.
He has
developed into an articulate and caring young man, determined and
passionate about young people having a voice, and being listened to.
In addition to the youth club programmes, he has been involved with
Nailsworth News and the Stroud News and Journal.
Recently
he joined the Stroud District Youth Council. He works actively for
projects in the community and at school.
His youth
leader says that Ollie has given up much of his spare time to give
young people a voice within their community.

The Sporting Excellence Awards
Throughout the last few years, the community has
watched the development of three young people who have made
exceptional contribution to international sport.
Peter Reed,
International Rower in the World Cup and World Championships.
Dan Robinson,
International Marathon Runner in the Olympics, World Championships
and Commonwealth Games.
Suzy Robinson,
International Table Tennis Player.
The
town, parents, friends and family of the three athletes are
obviously very proud of their achievements. To mark their
contribution to sport and our admiration we commissioned the
Glasshouse, Stourbridge to make each person a gift and their names
will be the first to go on the Chamberlain Sport Trophy.
They are all to be congratulated and I know their
dedication to training is exceptional. Perhaps we may see the
sportspeople compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
The Chamberlain Trophy for
Sporting
Excellence has been donated by James Chamberlain in memory of his
great grandfather, E. A. Chamberlain. The Chamberlain family have
been major investors in Nailsworth since 1879. The trophy, made by
Peter Ayres, Lite Welding, Nailsworth Mills Estate, will be
presented each year to a person or group who has excelled in their
field of sport. |
